This past weekend in Richmond Hill, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association hosted their Annual General Meeting. The Ontario Floorball/Unihockey Federation secured a joint presence at the meeting to help introduce the sport of floorball and the services of the OFUF to the Ontario minor hockey community.
The OMHA Annual General Meeting is the largest gathering of minor hockey administrators in the world with 1,000 people attending on average. In addition to administrators, the 100 OMHA Championship teams (approximately 3,500 players, coaches, trainers, friends and family) are invited to the Parade of Champions to be presented their championship banners.
Floorball was very well received by OMHA administrators and by the players. They were impressed that the skills one can learn playing floorball easily translate to ice hockey and that by playing the sport they could improve their stick-handling, passing, shooting, heads up play and conditioning. The zorro demonstrations put on by the OFUF proved to be a huge hit with the players as was the fact that floorball could aid them in learning the “toe drag” or “pull in” shot.
Overall, the weekend was a great success for the OFUF and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the Ontario minor hockey community in the future.

The Festival on Bloor, an annual street festival hosted by the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre between Spadina and Bathurst, attracted a huge crowd this afternoon. Amongst the hundreds of vendors the Ontario Floorball/Unihockey Federation hosted a floorball booth to introduce the sport to local residents. The beautiful sunny weather made sure that Annex residents packed the streets to enjoy the festival’s plethora of activities.
The Annex neighborhood has been an important breeding ground for floorball in Canada, as the origins of the nation’s first club — The U of T Floorball Club — and its first league — the Toronto Floorball League — can both be traced back to this eclectic Toronto ‘hood adjacent to the University of Toronto community. Annex residents once again embraced floorball with open arms as nearly 50 adult players registered for additional floorball information. The OFUF was also happy to make connections with several key figures in school and after-school sports.
The next floorball promotion on OFUF’s busy schedule will be a joint marketing effort at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Consumer Show June 15-16 in Richmond Hill.
The Ontario Floorball/Unihockey Federation took part in the Mississauga Sports Camps & Leisure Show on Saturday, Ferbruary 25th, 2007. The show, organized by the Mississauga Sports Council, brings Mississauga’s sports groups to Square One Shopping Centre, one of the busiest malls in North America.
The OFUF was given a floorball booth at a prime location in front of the Godiva Chocalatier store on Square One’s second level to promote floorball in the city. Throughout the day, interested shoppers stopped off at the booth to learn about floorball. Adults and children were very interested in the sport and were eager to start playing.
Drawing a crowd to the booth were the exciting zorro/air hooking demonstrations put on by Balraj Jutla, Mike Woods and Sonja Hotke. The three zorro wizzes were invited to Square One’s Centre Court to put on a zorro show in front of hundreds of people.
Floorball in Mississauga is gaining in popularity. The City of Mississauga runs youth and adult programs at Huron Park Community Centre. The OFUF hopes to expand to other community centres in the near future and is meeting with Rink City Sportsplex next week to discuss adding floorball to their sports offering.
The OFUF was represented by Juha Mikkola and he would like to thank Mike Woods, Balraj Jutla, Henry Korhonen and Sonja Hotke for volunteering their time at this event. The OFUF also wishes to thank the Mississauga Sports Council for their continued support.
